Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric or Weight loss surgery is actually a metabolic surgery altering the hormonal responses in the Intestinal tract. People who are obese have a high secretion of hormone-Ghrelin in the fundus of stomach. This is a powerful hormone causing insulin resistance and resultant Diabetis. It also causes Metabolic Syndrome with hypertension ,heart disease, sleep apnea, major joints issues. Obesity could be a factor for infertility in women

Bariatric surgery involves disconnecting the secretion of ghrelin which in turn causes reversal of metabolic Syndrome.

There are basically two types of surgeries Restrictive and Malabsorbtive. In Restrictive surgeries like Sleeve Gastrectomy the patient has a smaller stomach hence cannot eat more. The disadvantage is that over time the reduced stomach can stretch and a patient can regain weight. In surgeries which create malabsorbtion –Gastric bypass –the food is bypassed and travels through the residual intestine faster with reduced absorption causing a more consistent weight loss for longer periods of time.

I usually do a combination of both procedures- Mini Gastric Bypass-which has given consistent results. In all the operated patients regain of weight is seen in some pts who underwent a Sleeve Gastrectomy but none in the pts with mini gastric bypass. Now I do the process Robotically with better postoperative outcomes and lesser complications during surgerys
