Advanced Hiatus Hernia Treatment in Hyderabad
Hiatus Hernia is a condition where part or whole of the stomach migrates into the chest through the Esophageal Hiatus- opening in the diaphragm
Most often it is only part of the stomach which herniates into the chest. Most of these patients present with symtoms of Reflux Disease-acid eructations, increased belching, or regurgitation of food.
- Investigations Include
- Upper GI Endoscopy
- Esophageal Manometry
- Ph study
- CT scan
Treatment for Hiatus Hernia is surgery, though for small asymptomatic hernia patients can be on follow up
The procedure involves reduction of the hernia and esophagus of atleast 5cms in length , a crural repair- narrowing the hiatus, and creating a wrap around the lower esophagus of 4cms
The common procedures done are Nissen Fundoplication or a Toupet fundoplication
I have been operating on Hiatus hernia since 1998. Initially it was Laparoscopic but now it is mostly Robotic. After doing more than 1200 Fundoplications Laparoscopically, I have found Robotic Fundoplication offers a distinct advantage due to the 3D vision and articulation of instruments. Also due to lack of tremor, intrathoracic dissection is clear and bloodless.
